Stephanie Amada, an assistant professor in Michigan State University’s Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures department, recently released her ebook,  Hooking Up: A Sexy Encounter With Choice.

The ebook intends to serve as an informative guide for college-aged women about the phenomenon that is hookup culture on college campuses. The biggest message is the idea that women have autonomy in how they choose (or choose not) to participate in hookup culture. Amada said:

“Women have a choice with how they want to be sexually and within the world of dating and relationships.  I think the reason I focus on women is that they often feel like they don’t have a choice and I want women to take away that they have a choice in all aspects of this.”

During the first week of the book’s publication, Amada held a promotion that allowed whomever was interested a free copy if they signed up for one. The result? Over 500 interested readers! The number speaks for itself; the book’s topic has pertinence.

What I love most about the book, however, is how it is written in a conversation tone, which to me emulates the essence that is Stephanie Amada. Last year, I was struggling with some personal issues, and was lucky enough to able to turn to Amada for support and feel no judgment, safe, and ultimately cared about. The book is written in this manner, and I think-especially for a touchy subject like hooking up-is important and is what makes this book so great for young women.
